Hip flexor muscles, are located at the front part of your hip that allow you to run or walk in forward direction. A great amount of stress is applied to hip flexor muscle while sprinting or kicking which may cause strain and hence an injury. This muscle requires treatment as its injury can be quite painful. Tearing or stretching of hip muscle or tendon can result in its injury.
When you bring your knee towards your chest, the hip flexor muscles help you to bend at the waist. The injury to these muscles can range from mild to severe and can even impair with your mobility.
Causes of hip flexor injury:
The people who tend to use their hip muscles to greater extent such as cyclists, martial artists, dancers, soccer players or participants of step aerobics are likely to have more chances of hip flexor injury. Deep stretching of thighs may also cause such injury.
Treatment of hip flexor injury:
The treatment or healing of hip flexor injury depends upon the severity of the situation.
Give rest to the muscles: The hip flexor muscles can be brought back to normal if strenuous task involving these muscles are avoided. For example, the cyclist can pick up to swimming to relieve hip flexor muscles.
Home remedy: You can apply ice packs on the injury and repeat the same after every three to four hours. Alternatively, you can heat the affected area with heating pads or wet warm cloth. This will ease the pain and provide soothing effect.
Consult a doctor: You can pay visit to a family doctor who will be able to examine your injury and provide you with suitable pain killers or effective treatments.
Exercise: There are some stretching exercises available to recover from the injurywhich shall be performed carefully without stressing the hip flexor muscles. Gentle walks are also recommended for relaxing the muscles.
The recovery of hip flexor injury may vary depending upon the severity of the injury. It may last from less than one week to more than six weeks. In extreme situations, a surgery may be required to replace the ruptured muscle.
Since prevention is better than cure. It is advisable to pay attention to strength, mobility, flexibility and balance in your daily routine. Avoid stretching to the point where you feel extreme pain.
